Why Bike?

Our Answers | Tell Us Your Story

How many of us would now love to make a bike commute of a few miles every morning if the geography we navigate daily made it feasible? How many of us bemoan the high cost of short errands in the car? Walking takes a long time and modern adult lives are even busier than a kid's summer vacation. Bicycling saves time compared with walking and the right kind of equipment can solve all the problems and challenges of daily transportation, including finding parking.

The reader should realize that I have been a lifelong motorhead. I have always loved hotrods, customized vehicles and exotics. And I still do. But I love them the way horse lovers love horses. They are fun to play with, but fast becoming economically and environmentally undesirable for routine daily use. I am appalled at what is happening in China today with regard to their new and rapidly growing appetite for automobiles. But I think the presently insatiable demand by the common Chinese citizen for this new and exciting car owning experience will probably accelerate the sowing of the seeds for the eventual demise of automobiles as personal transportation. They will rapidly exhaust all the needed materials, supplies and fuels required to feed their appetite. And they will render the rest of us unable to continue our automotive indulgences long before that.

I ride 40 miles, round trip, in city traffic. I average 160 miles a week (4 days a week). A year ago I would have laughed at the idea I could do this at age 51, but after biking to the bus stop for several months I decided to ride home one day and have never looked back. I look forward to the ride every day and realize many many of the benefits mentioned on this site. I especially enjoy identifying birds and wildlife along the way and regularly greet other bikers and walkers along the route. I use a 1970's vintage Motobecane that was collecting dust in my garage for years (turns out it's not a bad commuter bike), although I'd be interested in the one described on your site.

I am a 6'3" commuter wannabe. At 245 pounds I use a bicycle to get in shape and lost 35 pounds in 3 months last time I rode 3 yrs ago. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to fit in the bicycle with my hectic scehdule. If the bicycle was fully functional and in a case that I could put in the trunk of my car - it would be an easy sale. And yes, I would pay readily for such an item. Many professionals I know would. It just isn't feasable to throw a 60 cm frame on and off my car during a busy week - so that i can ride in the middle of the day.

I believe in everything associated with commuter bicycling. This new design looks fascinating and very promising. I'd like to stay informed.

What a great idea! I love biking (road and mountain) and I would love to bike to work, however it's a bit far in the morning. This bike seems to be able to do long distances at good speeds. And its portable!!!

How and when can I get one?!

Please keep me posted.

All the reasons stated on the site...fuel usage, health, etc. It simply makes more sense for the sub 15 mile commuter to use a bike. Build it and they will RIDE!

I'm passionately interested in ANY breakthrough bicycle technology that holds such great promise for me, and for the world we live in!

Fifty years ago, at the age of 10, I purchased my first bike from Estes Bike Shop in Sarasota, Fl. I worked odd jobs all week and pedaled downtown on Saturday morning to make my $5 bike payments. That experience -- the feelings of pride, ownership, and independence -- will forever be a part of my psyche.

I've had a bike of some kind for the half-century since that first red Schwinn. I love to ride simply because it's such a healthy thing to do. It's also healthy for the communities we live in. I honestly believe that the Commuter Bike could well make a difference in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels for transportation. Even if it helped us move a fraction of a degree away from our present course, it would be positive, and significant. I'm really looking forward to owning one of the first production models!
